THE CARBON OFFSET PROJECTS

DRINKING WATER PROJECT IN Uganda

About 45 % of the rural population of Uganda does not have access to clean drinking water. As a consequence, water must be boiled. This does not only cause emissions but also smoke development during the cooking process which often leads to eye and respiratory diseases. Within this project broken boreholes are identified, repaired and maintained to give access to clean drinking water, making the boiling with firewood superfluous and thus avoiding huge amounts of CO2 emissions.

FOREST PROTECTION PROJECT MADRE DE DIOS IN PERU

The region Madre de Dios is a part of the Amazon rain forest. It is home to various indigenous peoples and its biodiversity is one of the greatest worldwide. Since 2009, the project protects an area of 100,000 hectares and helps local communities with sustainable management. Its main goal is to preserve the forest as a gigantic CO₂ storage. Measures include, among others, reforestation, sustainable forest management, and the creation of financial incentives to protect the woods.

WHAT DOES
CLIMATE NEUTRAL MEAN?

CALCULATION: CO2 FOOTPRINT

CO2 balance of the company and its products

REDUCTION: CO2 EMISSIONS

Climate protection strategy to reduce CO2 emissions

COMPENSATION: CO2 REMAINDER

Support of carbon offset projects

THE JOURNEY: CALCULATION. REDUCTION. COMPENSATION.

To us, climate neutral means that as a company, we act in a climate friendly way and offer our customers products whose CO2 emissions are compensated with the help of internationally recognised carbon offset projects, making it effectively possible for clients and consumers to protect our climate in an easy and comprehensible manner. To achieve this, we calculate the total CO2 emissions wherever possible and compensate the inevitable emissions by supporting certified carbon offset projects.

Of course, we know that climate neutral products are only the first step, which must be followed by many more. But this is a step we can take right now and for us, that’s what counts! Climate neutral fruit and vegetables, too, will continue to cause emissions. Therefore, in future, we will make it our goal to motivate our partners to look for innovative and climate friendly alternatives so that emissions shall be reduced to a minimum, not only inside Port International, but all along the supply chain.

    Organic Fairtrade bananas

Our organic Fairtrade bananas not only come in organic quality, but are also Fairtrade certified.

The Fairtrade seal shows that our bananas originated from fair trade and that during their production, specific social, ecological and economic criteria were observed. All farmers who export Fairtrade bananas have the Fairtrade certification. Regular audits ensure that the relevant Fairtrade standards are adhered to.

The seal assures the consumers that the small farmers and workers receive a stable and fair price for their fruits, a price that covers the costs of a sustainable production. In addition, a Fairtrade premium is paid for every products. The farmers, who are organised in cooperatives, decide for themselves what the premium is used for. Possible examples would be the construction of wells for drinking water, the construction or renovation of roads and schools, medical care or further education and trainings.

So when they buy bananas with the Fairtrade seal, consumers help improve the living and working conditions of small producers all over the world.

    Organic bananas

The label “organic” means that our bananas are cultivated and harvested according to the standard of organic farming. The aim of this agricultural method is to produce food by using only natural substances and processes with the objective of reducing the negative effects on the environment.

    Organic farming includes:

    • responsible use of energy and natural resources
    • conservation of the biological diversity
    • preservation of the regional ecological balance
    • improvement of soil fertility and
    • preservation of water quality

As opposed to conventional bananas, high quality organic bananas are treated exclusively with organic fertilisers and never with chemical pesticides.

The demands on organic farming also promote a higher animal protection standard that considers the specific needs of animals. The provisions of the European Union for organic agriculture give a clear structure to the entire EU, thereby ensuring a reliable labelling of organic products.
